Martin Berkeley, the founder of Corvinus Capital, delivered the guest lecture on the Legal Aspects of Financial Regulation course on the University of Reading’s highly acclaimed LLM course to a class of international lawyers. The title of the lecture was Principle Based Regulation: Comply or Explain. The lecture considered the origins and purpose of principle-based regulation, as well as the weaknesses and failures of this approach. Case studies and case law were used to illustrate key points, these included the Madoff Ponzi scandal and the Reading based HBOS fraud. Commenting Martin said, ‘It was a privilege to be asked to give the lecture at my Alma Mater, it was a great class who asked me some really searching questions!’.
